The Anesthesia Care Team (ACT) Approach

The COAAA strongly supports the ACT approach in anesthesia management. In an ACT, the certified anesthesiologist assistant is supervised by a licensed anesthesiologist. Together, they provide the highest quality of anesthesia care. The COAAA believes that the interests of patient safety are best served with an anesthesiologist's involvement in the delivery of every anesthetic and that anesthesiologists are most qualified in making anesthesia related perioperative medical decisions. Delegation of anesthesia care to the CAAs is at discretion of the anesthesiologist, in accordance with established state regulations and local credentialing guidelines.
