COAAA is run by four CAAs who volunteer their time. The board works to maintain practice rights in Colorado, to expand where CAAs can practice, and to represent the profession to hospitals, programs and the state. Board positions are two year terms, and any COAAA member can stand. You can put your own name forward or nominate a colleague.
You must be a Fellow Member of COAAA to run for a position, which means a CAA who is licensed and currently practicing in Colorado. If you are not a member yet, or your membership has lapsed, join as a Fellow Member first and then submit your nomination.
A two year term. The board meets quarterly, and skips a meeting when there is nothing that needs deciding, so in practice it is three or four meetings a year, virtual most of the time. Serving does not depend on where in Colorado you practice. The roles are unpaid, though documented expenses are reimbursed.
You can put forward a colleague as well as yourself. COAAA contacts every nominated individual to confirm they are interested in running and to complete the rest of the application.
The four offices are defined in the COAAA bylaws. What follows is what the work actually involves now. Applicants give a first and second choice on the nomination form, so you do not have to settle on one. The people currently in these roles, and where they practice, are on the officers page.
Chief executive officer of the Academy. Supervises the business and affairs of COAAA, presides at meetings of the members and of the officers, and signs the instruments the officers have authorized.
Acts in the President's absence, or if the President cannot or will not act, with all the powers of the President and subject to the same restrictions. Takes on other duties assigned by the President or the officers.
Keeps the minutes of board and member meetings, sees that notices go out when they should, and looks after the Academy's records. The membership register itself is maintained by the membership system.
Oversees the Academy's finances. Dues are collected, receipted and banked automatically, so the role is stewardship rather than bookkeeping: keeping track of income and spending, reporting the financial position to the board, proposing the annual budget, and advising what the Academy can afford to take on. The Treasurer also makes the Academy's annual filings, the periodic report to the Colorado Secretary of State and the federal return.
Under the bylaws, Fellow Members are the Academy's voting members, and they elect the officers, one vote each. Associate and Student Members hold no vote in the governance of the Academy.
Where only one candidate stands for a position, that candidate is confirmed without a ballot. The result of the election is announced on December 1, 2026.
